Nadia Malik, Designer
Nadia Malik is a costume and set designer, costume supervisor and costume maker. With theatre design and costume supervision experience dating back to 2002, Nadia's work has encompassed new writing, original and adapted classics, opera, traditional folk dance, contemporary dance, musicals, period plays, site-specific and experimental devised work, live art and exhibitions.
After attaining a BA in Textile Design (1st class hons) she then designed lingerie and nightwear for high street stores in the UK and USA before completing an MA in Costume Design for Performance (distinction) at the University of the Arts London.
Through strong visual concepts and a collaborative approach to performance devising, Nadia's costume and set designs create movement possibilities, enhance character and narrative development, and communicate meaning to audiences.
Nadia is a member of the 'Thinking Through Performance Group' at London College of Fashion, a small group of performance practitioners and academics who meet to explore and research current issues around performance, design, the body, movement and dress.
Having also been a member of a dance company and a founding member of a live art company, the culmination of Nadia's background and current practice as a costume and set designer has extended her interest in representations of the body through costume, movement and visual experimentation, and specifically how those practices stimulate audiences to engage in performance.
Nadia is one of the founding members in the UK's first professional company dedicated to contemporary shadow theatre techniques (ShadowStage Productions). She has taught costume and movement workshops at the Royal Academy of Dance and costume design workshops in schools. www.nadiamalik.com
